Professor Donica Belisle, September 2022

Welcome

I am a writer and historian at the University of Regina. Currently I am researching the history of Canadian sugar, both global and local. Forthcoming works include a book, co-authored with Rizwaan Abbas, about Canadian sugarcane plantations in Fiji. I am also working on an edited diary originally written by a sugar executive’s wife, as well as an article about business steamship travel in Oceania and a book and article about sugar in Canadian home economics education.

Prior to specializing in sugar I wrote two award winning books in retail and consumer history, and several award winning articles in gender history, and labour history. I contribute often to the media and to the profession, serving on SSHRC panels, prize committees, and editorial boards.

Since 2005, Canada’s federal granting agency for the Humanities and Social Sciences, SSHRC, has supported my research. I have over 20 years of experience in securing institutional, provincial, and federal funding.

Currently I am accepting Honours and graduate students in women’s, gender, labour, business, and related histories. If you are interested in working with me at the University of Regina please reach out.
